The Thing We Lost When We Gained Everything

It comes in the quiet moments. When you've just finished a project and there's no one to share it with. When you're between clients and the silence feels louder than the work ever did. When you realise you have all the freedom in the world, but somehow, you feel more alone than ever.

I have everything I wanted. So why does it feel like something's missing?

We were told freedom would be enough.
Leave the cubicle, they said. Work from anywhere. Be your own boss. Set your own hours. The promise was intoxicating: unbundle yourself from the corporation and finally, finally, be free.
And so we left. Millions of us.
We traded the corner office for a corner café. We traded the corporate ladder for a portfolio career. We traded the security of a paycheck for the thrill of possibility.
But here's what no one told us:
When you unbundle the job, you also unbundle the belonging.
In the old world, you knew where you belonged. You had a desk. You had a team. You had a company holiday party where you ate bad cake and complained about the CEO with people who knew your name.
Today? You have a laptop. A WiFi connection. And a growing collection of coffee shop loyalty cards.
We gained everything we asked for. And somewhere along the way, we lost something we forgot we needed.
Each other.

This loss isn't just emotional. It's structural.
In the old model, trust was baked into the system. When you hired someone from a reputable company, you knew what you were getting. Their credentials came pre-verified by the institution that employed them. Their reputation was visible through years of shared context.
In the new model, every relationship starts from zero.
Every client must ask: Is this person who they say they are?
Every freelancer must prove: I am worth your trust.
This creates what we call the trust deficit — a gap between the promise of the talent economy and the reality of transacting within it.

This friction is the hidden tax of the modern economy. And it's exhausting.

We've been thinking about this all wrong.
The old bundle wasn't bad. It just wasn't built for this world. It gave us security at the cost of freedom, belonging at the cost of autonomy.
The new unbundling isn't bad either. It gives us freedom at the cost of security, autonomy at the cost of belonging.
But here's the thing about bundles: you can build new ones.
The question isn't whether to bundle or unbundle. The question is: What should the new bundle contain?
